DIRECTOR'S GREETINGS

We have lived in an age in which national safety and the industrial economy guaranteed the lives of our citizens. However, we are now living in an age when ‘overall quality of life’ is necessary because culture, welfare, and health have rapidly come to the forefront of society. Now is the time to clearly recognize the changes in the paradigm for ‘quality of life’ that we have been seeking up until now and to prepare for a new future. We have been talking about quality of life, but the meaning of quality of life has not been clearly defined, and the discussion has been biased. The discussion on quality of life has been related to national or macroscopic aspects rather than focusing on individuals. We have been talking about the importance of an interdisciplinary approach. However, the scope has been unclear, communication has not been smooth, and the definitions and concepts of the technologies that should be ultimately delivered have not been distinctive enough.
Now, at this point, several important changes have been identified for the preparation of the future. First, quality of life has become altruistic, and thus, the objective of improving quality of life has been symbiosis.
Second, quality of life is sought in a way that is oriented to nationals and local citizens. Thus, quality of life is improved so that general citizens may benefit from the development of science and technology as much as possible in everyday life.
Third, the approach to improving quality of life has become one of fusion and integration. Various intertwined problems are flexibly approached from a complex and multilateral point of view.
Fourth, the focus on the characteristics of technology pursued to improve quality of life has been switched to the appropriate technology, which will create the best tools for life by considering the life styles of users, surrounding resources, and potential requirements.
In this context, the so-called life-oriented science and technology of citizens, which was neglected in the macroscopic pathway of science and technology in the past, is now drawing attention as an innovative technology which is able to genuinely realize quality of life in our time. A life style in which a natural ecosystem and human ecosystem exist together harmoniously with a technological ecosystem compensating for any insufficiencies will be the way to improve the quality of life of individuals and solve the various problems of countries and the world.
The Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH is the first step to seek a mature life style, which is symbiosis, wearing the lenses of fusion and integration, in order to further develop the life-oriented science and technology of citizens for the necessary appropriate technology which is our future goal. Conventional life science will lead the new life-innovative fusion theory and research as a model for future realistic symbiosis study, pioneering a field of fusion education to foster future human resources, and newly establish a service infrastructure as the application of the results from studies supplying the appropriate technology.

Dean's Greetings

It has been already one and half years since the Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH was established in the College of Human Ecology at Yonsei University to integrate humans, nature, and technology in response to the requirements of our time seeking a harmonious symbiotic life. The Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH was established by integrating conventional university research centers and inter-college research centers to seek a new future vision. This is a milestone to flexibly lead the changes in the 21st century.
Development of humankind has been accomplished by qualitative innovation through changes. Creative thinking and action, which are important in creating change, do not mean following what others are doing but taking the initiative and challenging others despite difficulties. Education and research integrating various studies such as natural science, humanities and social research, and design, which are the advantages of human ecology, have been developed over the past 50 years, following the evolution of those fields. Even in this age of fusion and integration, human ecology will continuously contribute to our society by leading a society of symbiosis.
The Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH will take the initial role of leading others and initiating those changes in a future society in a domestic and international network. On the other hand, making the most of the features of human ecology, which is an application of studying the necessities of human life such as food, clothing, and shelter, the Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH will conduct studies with developing countries for which Korea could possibly help to seek a direction of life for symbiosis in a global society. I hope that a new knowledge base which may make a substantial contribution to society seeking integrated, smart, and eco-friendly values may be prepared through the positive and creative future changes that will be made by the activities of the six research centers under the Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH.
I hope that the Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH will produce creative people who may be the first movers in the world, and I hope that the Institute of Symbiotic Life-TECH will be a world-class institute contributing to the development of Yonsei University as well as to the global society in the long term through life style innovation studies to realize the values of symbiosis leading to the happiness of humankind.
