Introduction to the Research Center

Currently, textiles and the fashion industry are involved in not only clothing but also high-tech industries such as environment, leisure sports, medicine, and biotechnology due to the innovative development of materials and technologies. In particular, the future textiles and fashion industry are turning from simple traditional industry to a knowledge-intensive high-tech industry by combing information technology (IT), nanotechnology (NT), and biotechnology (BT). Accordingly, textiles and fashion products will be the key mediators having a direct and continuous effect on the human body and life. The market size for textiles and the fashion industry will continuously grow to a huge scale which is much greater than that of other products. With such a future, the area having a high future potential among the domestic and international textile and fashion areas is textile and fashion research.

According to the changes and requirements of our times, the Research Center for Textiles and Fashion was established to make an academic development in clothing studies, to provide a theoretical and technological basis to the development of textiles and the fashion industry, and to conduct various studies which are necessary to lead the scientific clothing culture. For these purposes, the Research Center is conducting studies in technology integrated textiles and fashion research areas in which various aspects of textiles and fashion are combined with IT, NT, and BT, in the marketing systems of the clothing industry, and in psychological and physiological aspects for the relationship between clothing and humans. As a pivot of industry, education, and research cooperative studies, the Research Center for Textiles and Fashion conducts interdisciplinary studies through cooperation with relevant institutions, contributes to society by means of academic study, and makes clothing study professional.

At present, the Research Center for Textiles and Fashion consists of a total of 7 permanent research areas with 58 researchers and is operated by 7 laboratories.

Main Areas of Research

Until now, the Research Center for Textiles and Fashion has conducted studies focused on clothing, which is the most fundamental thing in human life. The Research Center has developed and designed materials for healthy, fresh-feeling, functional sports clothing, smart clothing, highly functional textile materials/emotional materials and conducted integrated studies among clothing-based areas related to design, consumers, and the marketing of clothing. In addition, the Research Center has actively conducted studies in cooperation with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, the Agency of Defense Development, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, Korea Fashion Association, and other private companies.

Vision and Direction of the Research Center

Currently, the Research Center for Textiles and Fashion has the following research directions depending on the characteristics of high technology fusion: 1) intelligent functional clothing study; and 2) IT-connected textile fashion industry process study.

First, in the intelligent functional clothing study, multiple integrated technologies are studied among IT hardware technology-NT-BT-textile and fashion technology.Various intelligent functions are given to the conventional types of clothing and the sensibility of the clothing’s own is preserved to increase quality of life. Promising research topics are study of intelligent textiles with a signal transport function, study of body state monitoring clothing, study of clothing with various convenience/entertainment service functions, study of clothing with energy harvest functions, and study of sports clothing with high-tech functions.

Second, in the IT-connected textile fashion industry process study,IT software technologies such as electronic image processing technology, database construction technology, and information processing system technology are connected with the industrial process including textile and fashion commercialization and marketing in order to upgrade textile and fashion industry technology.
Promising research topics are social network-based fashion consumer behavior study, social network-based fashion marketing study, and online customized clothing commercialization system study.
The technology integrating study of the Research Center for Textiles and Fashion will take the lead in upgrading the clothing industry to fit with the future vision of textiles and the fashion industry.
