Introduction to the Research Center

The goal of the Research Center for Future Environmental Design, which was formerly the Institute for Millennium Environmental Design established in 2001, is to make Korea take the lead in the area of environmental design and raise Korea’s position as an advanced design country in the world by establishing infrastructure that includes useful knowledge and information for the improvement of the environment of Korea, which has rapidly changed in the last century, and the creation of a desirable future environment, and by helping in the collection, exchange, creation, and distribution of knowledge and information on the world’s environmental development in a creative way.

The objectives of the Research Center are as follows:
  • To form a center in which various paradigms and research areas are collected and the world’s experts in the relevant fields gather together to create an integrated vision for the future environment.
  • To play a central role in creating a collective synergic effect by combining a variety of information
  • To make known the spatial culture of Asia and to enhance the exchange of ideas on various environments and cultures
  • To form a center in which a design information infrastructure is efficiently established.
  • To form a center for ‘international education promotion’ in which the world’s competitive educational programs are exchanged to enhance creativity in the area of environmental design

To fulfill these objectives, the Research Center promotes basic projects from the following three areas.

  • Efficient collection of knowledge and information. A world congress will be established for efficient collection of wisdom and information in a short period of time in this era of information technology. The Research Center will gather domestic experts at Yonsei University by not only obtaining an order but also sending an outsourcing order and thereby strengthen the information gathering function.
  • Implementation to make the knowledge and information alive. This section may be divided into actual work implementation and education implementation. The former is to give counsel to an environmental plan required by society and execute the plan together, while the latter is to develop various types of educational models by delivering the collected information to the education system.
  • Distribution of knowledge. The Research Center will perform projects to deliver the collected information to various targets in appropriate ways and the targets include various parts of society including the fields of education, actual work, local governments, and general citizens.

Major Research Areas

The Research Center has endeavored until now to specialize the Research Center by conducting studies, events, and projects in the following research topics.

  • Future creative environmental paradigm
  • Possibility of mind set changes and high technology grafting in preparation of aging society
  • The newest integrated experimental studies of future environment
  • Silver industry for aging society
  • Society integrating residential community
  • Research and development on further housing
  • Development of aging-friendly environment universal design
  • Development of aging-friendly outdoor sports facilities and instruments
  • Development of Seoul flash care model for the elderly

Each of these research topics will be also developed in the future. In addition, based the experiences acquired from these topics, studies will be conducted from a symbiotic point of view, focusing on the studies of future environment development and sustainable eco-friendly housing.

At present, 18 permanent researchers, 6 invited researchers, 4 specialized researchers, 11 general researchers, and 22 research assistants affiliated with six colleges at Yonsei University, which are the College of Human Ecology, College of Engineering, College of Science in Education, College of Health Science, College of Liberal Arts, and Collage of Humanities and Arts, are having multidisciplinary exchange and communication by using the Research Center as a center for integrated studies.

Vision and Direction of the Research Center

The Research Center has focused on networking various studies on the future environment to prepare for the future environment, especially for the future environment of an aging society. As the aging society is rapidly approaching, aging-friendly industries will gain more attention as a new growth engine of the country in the future. Therefore, the research center will be ready to accept a large number of differentiated research projects by preparing a comprehensive consortium for the future aging-friendly environment in the university and in Korea.

Through these activities, the Research Center will reduce the anxiety and financial load with regard to the socioeconomic depression and pressure on individuals and the government due to aging. In addition, the Research Center will provide a novel and realistic direction to solve the environmental problems of the elderly, which are found in distressed communities all over Korea, by efficiently revitalizing urban areas and thus eventually contributing to the activation of Korea and its cities.

In addition, although Korea has world-class construction technologies for high-rise buildings, it conducts a low level of international activities in dealing with the overall residential environment. Therefore, to move into the global market, a new paradigm is necessary. The Research Center will conduct eco-friendly housing studies by considering that the significant points of the future international housing market will be energy efficient and environmentally friendly housing. The purpose of conducting eco-friendly housing studies is to develop an in-house energy-producing system which connects a control algorithm that accomplishes both energy saving and a fresh indoor environment with construction components as well as human behavior by combining the behavior and psychology of humans, the ones who use energy, to construction facility control by applying building energy control strategies and technologies which are different from conventional ones. The results of the research will have great contributions on energy saving, reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, development of new alternative energy sources, and Korea’s green growth in the era of the global environment.
